Here, Ballou is answering the question: So, if salvation is done deal why do we need church, God, Jesus, etc. Good question.
Funny that he seems here to be reacting to a church that in a way recognizes this, but argues against it out of self preservation, otherwise, why bother asking the question?
Unlike the Treatise on Atonement here is answer is consise (at least by what appears to be the standard of the time) and much more cogent - less rambling.
He answers the question with two answers, and spends the rest of the work filling in the details of the answers with scriptural reference as Ballou is prone to do
First, ha, ha! Joke's on you! No such thing as hell, we made the whole thing up to keep things in check!
Second, you really didn't need hell in the first place. Humans would have been fine without it, maybe even better off!
The funniest part of the whole thing is logical proof that there really isn't a hell is when he gets into what happens to someone who is in heaven who breaks a rule. Can they get tossed out of heaven into hell for breaking a rule? He funny is that? So, then if there isn't a hell, what's the reward of heaven, not having to follow the rules anymore?
